Version 1.4 released
Peng Wars » Devlog

Peng Wars 1.4 is out! This update adds lots of new Pengs, enemies, and stages, alongside achievements and rewards for collecting them. It also introduces the Parallel Pengiverse — once you've gone far enough in the Pengiverse, you can get all stars in a Pengiverse subchapter to unlock its Parallel counterpart, with new and stronger foes! Finally, you can equip your Peng Base with new weapons to handle tough enemies!
EDIT: Version 1.4.1 has been released, fixing the following bugs:
- Fixed an issue where the Freeze Ray weapon could occasionally overshoot enemies near the frontlines.
- Fixed an issue where the Freeze Ray weapon would occasionally fail to work when the game was sped up.
- Fixed a visual bug when restarting or exiting a level after editing options mid-level.
New Pengs
- Toy Block Peng, an All-Star Peng obtained by clearing Christmas Chaos: Easy. This unit resists damage from and can sometimes weaken Aquatic enemies, making it a great pick for taking on hordes of Tunissiles or trying to land hits on a Squiddler or Cosmopus.
- Skater Peng, an All-Star Peng obtained by clearing Christmas Chaos: Normal. This high-risk, high-reward Peng can deal huge damage to Glacial enemies if you can work around its low HP, short range, and single-target attacks.
- Miner Peng, an Uncommon Peng that can be obtained from clearing the third stage of the A Miner Problem special stage map. It uses rapid multi-target attacks for high DPS, and can punish Armored enemies with double damage and occasional piercing attacks for when its damage is capped.
- Sharpshooter Peng, a Rare Peng found from the third stage of the Quick on the Draw special stage map. Though expensive and fragile, this Peng has a quickdraw single-target attack with immense damage, especially against Spiky enemies, and is immune to status effects.
- A new Pengs of Legend unit. Get this powerful hero by clearing the new Pengiverse map, Blizzard Palace!
Peng Base Weapons
The Peng Missiles remain the default weapon. Other new weapons will be unlocked as you progress, and can be purchased for 30 Golden Fish each.
- Fish Gun: Blasts enemies for high single-target damage, but each use costs fish. Unlocked after clearing Chapter 1.
- Mega Flash: Causes all enemies to briefly flinch and be weakened, with a quick attack startup. Unlocked after clearing Chapter 1.
- Freeze Ray: Freezes non-Glacial enemies near the frontlines for a long time, and does minor damage. Unlocked after clearing Chapter 3's first map.
New Stages
- Two new Pengiverse chapters. These stages are balanced for level 20 Pengs, and having all the Common Pengs in their Awakened Forms is recommended.
- Voidpath Heights (6 stages, 2 new enemies)
- Blizzard Palace (7 stages, 2 new enemies)
- Three new Parallel Pengiverse chapters, which can be played after clearing the Blizzard Palace.
- A Parallel World (6 stages, 1 new enemy), after getting all stars in A New World
- Cryptic Catacombs (6 stages, 1 new enemy), after getting all stars in Mysterious Catacombs
- Frozen Plains (6 stages), after getting all stars in Vanished Plains
- Two new permanent special stage maps, which can be played as soon as Chapter 3 is available.
- A Miner Problem (5 stages, for level 10~12 Pengs)
- Quick on the Draw (5 stages, for level 12~14 Pengs)
- Three seasonal maps for Christmas, which can be played for free during the month of December and unlocked with Stage Keys otherwise.
- Christmas Chaos: Easy (6 stages, for level 6~7 Pengs, with 2 new enemies)
- Christmas Chaos: Normal (6 stages, for level 8~10 Pengs, with 1 new enemy)
- Christmas Chaos: Hard (5 stages, for level 11~14 Pengs, with 1 new enemy)
Balance Changes
Pengs
- Peng Fangirl: Has felt frustrating to use as a piercing unit due to its very slow attack speed, and also not worth bringing as a knockback unit. To aid it in both these roles, Peng Fangirl is seeing increased attack speed.
- Attack cooldown decreased from 403f (6.7167s) to 343f (5.7167s)
- Janitor Peng: While powerful in Chapter 2, Janitor Peng feels like it falls off compared to other options for ranged and multi-target attackers as the game progresses. As such, it's seeing a boost to its attack power and speed to stay more competitive with other midrangers.
- Base damage increased from 60 to 70
- Attack cooldown decreased from 180f (3s) to 155f (2.5833s)
- Balloon Peng: Compared to other melee attackers, Balloon Peng overperforms due to its safer standing range and high burst damage for its price. It's having its cooldown speed nerfed, so other melee options can have the advantage of being more easily stacked or replaced, alongside a slight decrease in attack power. From testing, it still remains a powerful option against enemies like Skewa and the Crystal Guardian.
- Base damage decreased from 90 to 80
- Base cooldown increased from 1050f (17.5s) to 1350f (22.5s)
- Ghost Peng: Earlier nerfs to Ghost Peng were effective in preventing it from feeling overpowered, but instead caused it to feel slightly too weak and frail for its price and long cooldown. The stat nerfs are hence being dialed back, though not completely eliminated.
- Base health increased from 150 to 175
- Base damage increased from 120 to 130
- Bard Peng: Feels highly underpowered and not so impactful on the battlefield, mostly being limited to countering Kool Krabs. Bard Peng is thus getting a new target trait which can synergize with its fellow Rare Pengs and several other units, alongside seeing its survivability, attack area, and uptime tuned up.
- Now also targets Dark enemies
- Base health increased from 120 to 240
- Attack area increased from 0~90 to 0~100 (Standing range remains 90)
- Attack cooldown reduced from 500f (8.3333s) to 460f (7.6666s)
- Bard Peng flinch threshold reduced from 0.5 to 0.3333
- Rapper Peng flinch threshold reduced from 0.3333 to 0.25
- Pengthulhu: While Pengthulhu is powerful if you can get it on the field, its immensely high cost makes the opportunities you get to do so rare. As such, its cost is being lowered slightly to make using it a bit more feasible on a wider variety of stages, while still maintaining its role as a super expensive, hard-hitting ranged unit. Its attack speed is also being touched up to enhance its effectiveness in this role and synchronize better with its idle animation.
- Cost reduced from 150 fish to 140 fish
- Attack cooldown reduced from 900f (15s) to 765f (12.75s)
Enemies
- Skewa: Although Skewa fills a strong role as a tank-buster melee enemy and counter to mini-tank spam, it feels a bit too tanky and hard to shake off at times. As such, it's seeing a slight HP nerf to make it less obnoxious both in standard levels and the Endless Gauntlet, especially the latter.
- Base HP reduced from 5000 to 4500
Other
- Airborne Units: Some units and enemies have had their airborne status adjusted this update. This will only affect them on stages with heavy wind for now, but will be extended to other mechanics in future.
- Pogo Peng and Spring Peng are no longer airborne
- Ghost Peng is no longer airborne (Polterpeng remains airborne)
- Diamond Magus is now airborne
- Alchemy Assault: To make it easier to get the achievement for clearing all levels of this minigame, some of the later enemies have been toned down in strength.
- Baby Shadow Seal move speed reduced from 3.5 to 3.0
- Oily Ollie move speed reduced from 4.0 to 3.5
- Leaning Tower of Seals HP reduced from 1000 to 900
- The Lord of Seals HP reduced from 8000 to 7500
- The Lord of Seals move speed reduced from 0.3 to 0.25
